For almost twenty-one years we have
been making toys here in Britain!
Wylye Valley Crafts and Design was started by the Husband and Wife team of Benedict and Hellyn Jeal in 1994. Fed up of tacky plastic and foam toys for their own children and strongly believing children's toys should be fun, educational, well-made and not literally costing the earth (environmentally conscious almost a decade before other manufacturers started to think about such issues). They designed and made robust active role-play, wooden toys for modern day children, all with distinctive Wylye Valley Crafts and Design style.
Nowadays at Wylye Valley Crafts and Design we don't just say we design in Britain, we actually still make our wooden toys in the Wylye Valley, Wiltshire. We still believe great toys don't have to cost our earth with the materials used and in the way they are made; in fact lots and lots of people now believe in our historically inspired 'British made' wooden toys. Wylye Valley Crafts and Design now has many times more the original workforce. With quality of workmanship still always at paramount, over the last 21 years we have managed to become market leaders in the British heritage toy marketplace.
Among Wylye Valley Crafts and Design customers are the national bodies English Heritage, The National Trust, Historic Scotland and Historic Royal Palaces, who together own or manage literally hundreds of historical attractions the length and breadth of Britain. Their visiting customers have for years been the most demanding; demanding not just the best of quality value for money, but also the best ethical attitudes! They know what they want and they know why they want it that way!
In an age when more and more parents are considering the ethical ways their children's toys are made, more and more manufacturers are beginning to think and act like us. BUT; do they actually know the people who make their toys and how they actually make them, do they use absolutely minimal packaging with an eye to the environment? 99%+ of our product and its total packaging is biodegradable or recyclable - making toys from wood or other natural fibres takes carbon out of our atmosphere when that material was growing. What is the carbon footprint of that toy because after all 'Our children's toys should not be costing their future!'
In such times as these, our British made, quality wooden toys are finding greater appeal with shoppers. We are supplying more and more retailers from Gift, Craft, Book and Model Shops to Farm Shops and Garden Centres. Possibly the one thing all Wylye Valley Crafts and Design retailers have in common is their desire to source the very best of products for their customers.
